Knit Picks Yarn Swift
An essential tool for any knitter or crocheter, the Yarn Swift holds your hanks or skeins of yarn in place as you wind them into balls. Simply clamp the swift onto a table or counter top to start winding yarn neatly and easily. Made from durable Birch wood, for a smart and modern style that will give pleasant palpitations to even the most discerning crafters.
For added durability, the swift features metal hardware. The metal screws feature a plastic stopper at the end to prevent scratches when clamping the swift onto a table. Fits a table, counter, or any surface up to 1-1/2” thick. Measures approx. 26″ (66cm) in diameter (68″/173cm circumference) and 26″ (66cm) tall when open.

How to use Yarn Swift (best when used in tandem with Knit Picks Ball Winder)
Secure swift to table top or counter up to 1-1/2” thick with bottom clamp. Be sure there is enough clearance around the swift for the umbrella to fully open and spin freely.Untwist your yarn. It should come in a nicely twisted figure 8 hank, and when it is untwisted, it will look like a big loop of yarn. Leave the ties in place for now, as they will keep your loose hank from tangling.Drape the open hank over the closed swift and pull it lightly to hold it at the center of the ribs.Open the swift like an umbrella, pushing the runner up the center shaft until your loose yarn hank is held firmly around the swift.Holding the runner in place, slide the center clamp up and tighten it under the runner, securing the swift in the open position.Make sure your yarn is not twisted anywhere around the swift, and cut the ties around the hank.Find the end of the yarn and pull, and the swift should spin freely. Wind with a ball winder or by hand!

Quality built
I have been so impressed with this winder! It winds smooth as silk, it’s quick, and makes it so easy to attach my hanks of yarn. I haven’t had a hank not fit it yet, and once on the winder, they never slip. This is beautifully made and there are no slivers of wood that could snag your yarn. It is shipped in an overly large, bright orange plastic, mesh-like “umbrella” cover which may be intended to dispose once you receive the package, but I trimmed mine down a little and use it as a way to protect the winder when I’m storing it between uses. As. winders go, this isn’t the cheapest, but nor is it the most expensive. What I can tell you is don’t spend the extra money for something that is supposed to look like a piece of furniture, when it isn’t going to do the job. This winder is good looking, and most importantly, will do the job it’s made to do with the utmost perfection.

Don’t bother with budget swifts…just get this one!
This is a great umbrella swift! It comes out of the box ready to use, spins smoothly, well-constructed, no imperfections. The first swift I had was a little hinky metal one that came with the budget winder I bought. The winder is still fine but I hated that swift. It didn’t spin well and had hard sharp edges that could catch the yarn. This one is like sunshine after that rainy day. LolHighly recommend this product!

Time saver!
I bought yarn skeins in a bundle and fought with the first three skeins. After seeing recommendations for getting a yarn swift /steiner, I started searching. I already have the Knit Picks yarn ball winder, so I decided to match brands, and it was on sale (bonus!)I followed the directions on the box to assemble and mount it on my table (only a couple minutes). I added the skein and was winding a yarn ball in no time.Tip: With my skein, I had to rotate it a couple times since the yarn was gently wound around the skein instead of staying on just the ‘outside’. I had the whole skein wound into a ball within 10 minutes!Ease of use, value for the money, works well.

Sturdy and Smooth
This is replacing an inexpensive metal and plastic swift that was annoying to use as the yarn caught in the metal hooks at it spun. I had only used it a few times when it fell apart a couple of nights ago so I decided to invest in a wood one. I just finished winding a skein of yarn with the Knit Picks Swift and the difference from my old swift is huge. This is very sturdy, clamping and holding nicely on my 1″ thick work surface. It easy telescopes to hold the yarn taut and spins smoothly. My husband commented on how quiet it spins. The wood is finished well without any rough surfaces or edges. I anticipate this swift will hold up well but will revise this rating if it doesn’t.

Turn hanks to cakes with ease!
I spent a long time researching before making a purchase. In the end, I wanted wood, not plastic. This swift sets up easily and works very well. It is my first swift – and I really put it to work winding my stash. I wish I had purchased a swift and ball winder YEARS ago! I have always relied on using the back of a chair and struggling through. This swift was a pleasure to use. I was primarily winding fingering weight (sock yarn), and just keeping a steady winding pace was all it took to wind perfect cakes.

Amazing quality!
This is the most beautiful swift I have ever seen. It came wrapped in a mesh sleeve to keep the swift closed and the box it was packaged in was quite sturdy and included instructions on the box as well as a slip of paper included inside on how to set up and use the swift. All of the wood is smooth so your yarn won’t be catching on anything and the two adjustable pins are sturdy metal with a plastic tip.

Works well. Good and sturdy but…
This swift is sturdy and works well except that the knob that turns the bolt on the umbrella column stripped after about 10 skeins. Amazon did give me a credit but I have to take the bolt to the local hardware store and see how I can rig it to work.

Klare Kaufempfehlung!

Have coveted a wooden swift for years, after admitting that I could never afford an Ashford one. Even this good quality one was, I thought, a purchase too far, even though I know the yarn brand. So, I bought a cheaper version/copy only to cry real tears and swear very long and loudly when it totally destroyed a 800m skein of alpaca and silk blend laceweight yarn that cost more than I’ll ever admit to spending on yarn! Then went in search of quality. This gorgeous little beauty was on offer at a really, really good price, and just threw itself into my basket, ooh bliss. It’s solid as a rock, with beautifully coloured wood, not sure of which tree, but it’s smooth to the touch and you can’t help but stroke it.I don’t know if it’s because I have issues with my hands (OE in all joints) but I found it did take myself and DH to attach it to the table.I held the swift as he tightened the substantial locking screws, and then it was quickly and solidly attached, I did place a folded towel between the table and swift to protect the table, as there is nothing inside the mouth that attaches to the table, but I would have done that anyway and once tightened it wasn’t going anywhere, in fact it seemed more stable with the towel. I then placed a skein of laceweight on the wings and extended the umbrella to get the correct tension for the length of skein, there is good variety of levels than can be achieved for varying skein lengths and thickness (DK, 4ply, lace etc), DH then tightened the umbrella screw and I was ready to fly?DH took one look and says, “It’s broken?” No it’s not that’s the tension arm! Watch this. With heart in mouth and with the swift now loaded with 800metres of silken beauty, I untied the knots that keep then ends together, set up my ball winder found the start end of the skein, fastened it to the winder and closed my eyes as I set it turning, I hadn’t appreciated the width of the wings and they caught my hand keeping the tension from swift to winder as it turned but after minor adjustment moving winder and pulling off more yarn manually before setting the winder going, off we set again, within 10mins, maybe less I had a perfectly formed centre pull doughnut shape ball of laceweight yarn. It’s a fluke I said, that can’t have just happened, no stops for knots, no tangles to cause grief, no loss of tension and having to stop to adjust, no wobbles, or helicopter take off vibrations, just smooth and swift ball winding joy.I tried again, with an even more expensive skein of laceweight……and wound faster to see if it stayed still and didn’t vibrate…it did and it didn’t vibrate and .AGAIN in less than the time it takes to knit a row of complicated lace I had another perfectly formed doughnut of yarn!!Would I recommend YOU BET..A word of caution… If you’ve never used a swift before, take your time and learn how it works, use a yarn skein that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and definitely complete your purchase with a decent ball winder. You will never go back to using DH’s arm, chair backs of god forbid try to wind using your knees or on your lap, believe me I’ve tried them all ,l even once tried it round my neck< don't even go there, not unless you want to look like the fly caught in a giant web? Buy this you won't be disappointed!
