This yarn ball winder (Model YBW-A) makes center pull yarn balls with a capacity of about 4 ounces. The clamp-on base allows it to be firmly fixed at the edges of tables, chairs, benches, or any other convenient locations. The maximum thickness of table that this can clamp on to is about 1 3/4\\”. It is best to be used with a swift yarn winder (Umbrella or Amish style, both available under Stanwood Needlecraft brand names). But you can easily replace a swift with other devices or just simply your arms. The craftsmanship on these ball winders is superior. In comparison to our model YBW-B, this winder is smoother and makes less noise while winding.

    Just Amazing!
EASY to set up, EASY to use, SAVES hours of rolling into a ball, GREAT price. Where has this been all of my life! Made yarn cakes all afternoon and saved myself hours of work and cramped fingers. My unit worked like magic and if it were to break tomorrow, I’d still order another one, I like it that much. Can’t thank the brain that thought this one up, wow oh wow! Highly recommend this yarn tool to those folks who use yarn for any project. Just hold your tension slightly tight and you will be astounded!

    Great Little Device
After knitting for years and trying to “hold on to that darn ball of yarn that kept jumping out of my lap,” I decided to purchase this. The great thing is it creates a ball that you call pull from the center and so the yarn doesn’t move. I bought this in conjunction with a yarn swift manufactured by the same company. The two work together beautifully to tame all that runaway yarn. Very easy to operate. My grandson, age 10, was eager to help me rewind all my yarn. I showed him one time how to load the skein of yarn on the swift, feed it to the ball winder, and he took over winding all my yarn. Once the yarn is wound with this device, it stores easier and knits so much easier. I highly recommend this item. It is a small investment that will yield great pleasure. If you have yarn that is already in a ball, just put the yarn ball in a small box, like a shoebox, and load up the ball winder. It is very easy to reshape the ball into the new shape. I love this!

    Just what I needed
I really do like this little yarn winder. I have slowly converted half of my yarn collection into cakes and it is easy to do while watching TV. Just take your time, don’t rush it, this is not a race. Also, don’t forget what you are doing as you are winding and make a cake the size of a dinner plate. I almost did that. The cakes hold together pretty well and a regular skein of yarn will convert into 3 or 4 cakes, depending on the size of that skein. I store them in 1 gallon size zip lock bags to keep the colors together and the yarn clean.Update: I have had this yarn winder for 6 weeks and just wanted to emphasize how much I like it. It is nothing fancy and I have to crank it myself but it does a great job. I am happy with the yarn cakes it makes. They average between 3 1/2″ to 4″ in diameter. That is a good size for me.

    Good winder for yarn
This yarn winder works well. However, I sometimes go too fast and it can easily get thrown off course if you aren’t paying attention. Knots can be an issue. But it is easy to use, just pay attention and don’t think you can just wind away mindlessly.

    Make your own yarn balls.
This gadget is wonderful. When my skeins of yard get messy I make my own balls. I highly recommend it.

    perfect for home use
works wonderfully and makes very easy to use, center pull balls. You set it up by attaching it to a table (I use a book shelf). The attachment has rubber feet and is help in place with metal and plastic which seems to work fine. I use it with an umbrella to wind the yarn. Its very fast, I can really get this thing going and it will wind faster than I ever expected. It does get a little tiring if you’re doing a few balls at once. The gearing in this thing means you don’t really have to turn it very fast to get the ball going quickly. The base of the mechanism is a kind of clutch I suppose. If the yarn gets caught, and the ball stops turning, it will snap and allow the mechanism inside to have a less violet reaction. This seems to work well. I’ve really gotten at it and occasionally, i’ll hear the popping of the base reminding me that I’m going too fast. As far as I can tell, it should hold up well over time. Its gotten a fair amount of abuse and still winds well – the gears don’t seem to be wearing.Assembly is pretty easy. You just have to snap a couple of pieces together. Instructions are pretty bad, but its not that complicated to use.

Easy to Use, Exactly what I Needed!
This thing is great! It came in two pieces and I was able to set it up without using the directions. It works exactly as intended and seems really sturdy! I wound three cakes in record time; way faster than I would have been able to by hand. It grips the table really well with the rubber pads and it doesn’t slide around. It also has a pretty large capacity, and even when I got toward the outside of the bobbin, it didn’t slide off. It’s easy to thread with the open coil, so you don’t have to thread it through a tiny hole. The directions say you need a swift or ‘a friend’s arms’ but if you’re working from regular skeins, you can just put them into a salad bowl so they don’t roll away and use your other hand for tension. I found that with a firmer tension, the cakes came out more solid with the middle more closed and tight so it wouldn’t come undone. It comes in a box that would be easy to wrap and give to someone as a gift, and the box fit into my mailbox so I didn’t have to worry about anyone taking it from my porch! All together a treat product! It doesn’t squeak, it doesn’t slip or skip rounds, and it’s so easy to use. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of it.

Best most dependable yarn winder ever!
I owned a royal yarn winder for almost twenty years and recently decided to get a new one. could not find a royal as they apparently no longer make them. I spent hours researching them (hubby laughs at me because they are not that expensive ) but I like to get the best that I can find. anyway everything I researched either turned out to be flimsy or loud and when I came across this one it sounds like it was made after the royal according to the discription. It works beautifully. nicely skeined yarns and very quiet and smooth. love it! hopefully it will last for the next twenty years.

So fast and easy to set up and use! Works great with my Amish style swift to make cakes of my most precious hanks of indie-dyed yarn! Saves so much time over hand winding and is quiet and durable! It is a lot smaller than I thought it would be but that just makes it ultra packable and space saving!I did notice that the little felty stickers on the bottom that keep it from scuffing the table are coming off right away. I may look into some thin felt stickers for the bottom of chair legs etc to replace them or in the interim, place some fabric between the winder and the table surface as others have done. Otherwise I’m super excited for this winder and so happy I got it!

What a game changer for organising yarn! I couldn’t wait to share, although it did take longer for delivery, as it might have come from China.smooth and quiet. Only thing I can say is that it’s the smaller version, smaller than I thought. It winds up approximately 70g of Double Knit yarn.

I considered buying a cheap winder but based on other reviews I went for this one. I am super happy with it. I use it with a Chiaogoo swift and it creates nice cakes of yarn.

I’m so glad I upgraded to this ball winder.I’ve bought two cheaper ball winders in the past (the $25 ones) and both have broken after minimal use and always taken care of (put back in the box after each use). This one had good directions included in the package. The directions, with pictures, are easy to follow with no chance of confusion. They even provide a way to contact the company should there be any issues.Though I’ve only used it once since it arrived, I must say I am completely satisfied with it. It is made of sturdier (thicker) plastic, the winder is smooth and doesn’t wobble (like my previous cheap ones), and works solidly and quietly.I wish I had bought this one in the beginning; I could have saved myself the cost of the 2 cheap ones.If you need a ball winder, avoid those cheap $25 ones and get this one. Much better value for your money.Recommended.
