This yarn ball winder (Model YBW-M) makes center pull yarn balls with a capacity of about 7 oz. The clamp-on base allows it to be firmly fixed at the edges of tables, chairs, benches, or any other convenient location. The maximum thickness of the table that this can clamp on to is about 1 3/4″. It is best to be used with a swift yarn winder (Umbrella or Amish style, both available under Stanwood Needlecraft brand names). But you can easily replace a swift with other devices or just simply your arms. The winder fits right between our legendary 10-ounce winder and our amazingly affordable 4-ounce winders.

    Works as expected
Works as expected. Sometimes you have to make a cake and then re-roll that cake with constant tension to make it more uniform. It can get messed up if you are stopping and going (like to untangle knots) a lot. It seems to be durable and I hope it will last for a long time.

    I am pleased
I like this hand winder. I bought a different brand and returned it. This one is easy to use and the center pull cakes are nice to work with. No tangles and does the job quickly.

    Great for center pull cakes
Lovely well made yarn winder. Makes very reliable center pull yarn cakes. I did my research and this winder had some of the top reviews. I use this along with a table spinner and I couldn’t be happier.

    Great yarn winder
I purchased this cake yarn winder after reading recommendations from quite a few posters from the yarny community on YouTube. It was so simple to set up (unlike another no-brand winder I picked up elsewhere previously) and I was ready to start caking in no time at all. I mounted it on a left-over shelf sized board that fits across my lap so It could be portable for use anyplace around the home. What I especially like about this winder is that it requires just one yarn guide so you can adjust the tension by holding the yarn to get as firm a cake as you like,; it holds a respectable 7 ounces of yarn and the working gears are completely enclosed eliminating the possibility of yarn getting hopelessly entangled in the gears. This yarn cake winder is a quality item, somewhat more costly than other similar winders, but well worth the price and I highly recommend it.

    Works great!
I bought this a couple months ago and finally tried it out. It winds the yarn smoothly into a nice little ball. I will definitely need a swift to make the process easier. I probably had a bit too much yarn for this size winder, so I’ll have to keep that in mind. But it was easy to use, stayed solid on the table edge, seems really well made. My only issue (probably because it was my first attempt) is that I should have hung onto the inner yarn end when I pulled the ball off the winder. I lost track of that end, so I don’t have an inner yarn pull now. Great purchase overall.

Right from the get go this yarn winder was skipping..
I’m about to return this product.. I am very careful about winding the yarn, I don’t speed and I watch it to make sure that it doesn’t get messed up. Unfortunately, this yarn winder skips, a lot, and the yarn goes above the ball and creates a mess. It especially does this with acrylic yarn. Terribly frustrating..

    Love this one too
I’ve had the big very nice Stanwood yarn winder for years and love it. I wanted a more portable Stanwood yarn winder too. This smaller one sets up & takes apart fast and easy and this can make big yarn cakes too!

Starwood yarn winder, name on the base, works exactly right and holds more than 100 grams of wool. I don’t know how much more as I haven’t tried larger hanks but probably 150 grams would work.

Purchased this for my girlfriend for Christmas after doing pretty extensive research into these winders and swifts to make sure I ordered something decent. The 10oz model was pretty highly regarded in different forums, but seemed like overkill. Might be worthwhile if your using heavier weight yarns. The packaging was pretty unimpressive, but the machine worked well, ran smoothly and quietly. I can imagine the cheaper ones being stuffed with shoddy iron gears and being noisy and clunky. I was tempted to order a cheap one in compare, but didn’t, so I guess I’ll never know!

I’m happy with this winder. Never had one before, even though I’ve been knitting for 55 years, so I don’t have anything to compare it with. But it’s helping me tame my large supply of cotton yarn for dish cloths. The cakes take up less storage space than the huge skein and are easier to knit from—win/win. I found the cakes were too loose unless I held the yarn with my left hand and wound with my right. Seems to need that extra bit of tension to avoid a too-loose cake. Glad I bought it.

Love this winder! Does the job of winding a skein of yarn into a cake in a couple of minutes!

Perfect for caking all the skeins in my stash. No setup or fussing needed. Worked better than expected. Glad I went with Stanwood!!!
